"Uchi Deshi" – Resident student internship

Daniel TOUTAIN offers 'uchi deshi' training programmes in his Dojo in Rennes. Referring to his own experiences with the late Morihiro Saito Sensei in Japan, in the Founder's Dojo in Iwama, Daniel Toutain is able to offer resident students a unique experience. Every participant is given the opportunity of personalised tuition well beyond what is available at regular classes and seminars. The total immersion implicit in this approach, allows students to really extend their knowledge and significantly accelerate their progress.
This type of training also has the advantage that practitioners of all levels, some very advanced, work together. Students come from all over France, and from abroad, to perfect their skills. Uchi deshi seminars are studious and convivial, helping to create friendly ties among practitioners of the Iwama school of Aikido. The late Morihiro Saito Sensei, more than anything, wished to preserve the authenticity of Aikido techniques through rigorous training while encouraging friendly relationships.

An extensive Aikido library and collection of videos are also available for study.

Uchi deshi training is restricted to adults having, with few exceptions, at least six months of prior Aikido experience.

There is no charge for accomodation.
Uchi deshi lodge in rooms attached to the dojo, with a fully equiped kitchen and dining area that allows meals to be prepared and taken together. Sheets, pillows, and pillow cases are provided, but students must bring a sleeping bag.

Different types of stay...

Basic Uchi Deshi weeks

These allow for participation in all regular dojo classes during the week and for personal training during the day.

Intensive Uchi Deshi weekends

These are special seminars for Yudansha (black belts) and teachers, or special seminars for candidates preparing for Dan gradings that are open to 2nd Kyu and above..

Intensive Uchi Deshi weeks

Intensive weeks run from Monday to Friday (see calendar) and generally preceed, or follow, monthly seminars (Saturdays) or other weekend seminars in Rennes, allowing uchi deshi to participate in these events too while lodging for free at the dojo. These are periods of intensive training during which the uchi deshi receive private personalised lessons in addition to all the regular dojo classes.
This is the most complete form of stay.

Long-term Uchi Deshi stays

It is also possible to stay for periods of several weeks, or months, to undertake more profound studies.

There is a strong demand for this, and the number of places is limited, so it is best to reserve well in advance.

Unregular intensive UCHI DESHI stays
In response to a number of requests it is now possible to organise special additional intensive weeks (not on the calendar), provided Daniel Toutain is available (for groups of 6 or more, for example, the teacher and some students from a particular dojo).

Rules

ALL FEES (UCHI DESHI STAYS, WEEKEND SEMINARS, DOJO CLASSES) MUST BE PAID ON ARRIVAL. UCHI DESHI MUST RESPECT A SYSTEM OF INTERNAL RULES.
LFAILURE TO DO SO WITH RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EXPULSION WITH REIMBURSEMENT OF FEES ON A PRORATA BASIS ACCORDING TO THE TIME REMAINING.

NOTICE ABOUT VISAS:
Daniel Toutain and the Aiki Shuren Dojo of France can no longer provide invitations to assist in obtaining a French visa. Those people who need a visa to study as uchi deshi must obtain this visa on their own.
